古藍(lán)田玉原生玉礦尚未找到，現(xiàn)代開采的藍(lán)田玉礦床位于陜西省藍(lán)田縣玉川鎮(zhèn)紅門寺村一帶，距縣城約35千米，含礦巖層為太古代黑云母片巖、角閃片麻巖等。玉石為細(xì)粒大理巖，主要由方解石組成。按礦物成分及外觀特征可將玉石分為五種：種為白色大理巖；第二種為淺米黃色蛇紋石大理巖；第三種為黃色蛇紋石大理巖；第四種為蘋果色蛇紋石大理巖；第五種為條帶狀透閃石化蛇紋大理巖。

藍(lán)田玉呈白、米黃、黃綠、蘋果綠、綠白等色，顯玻璃光澤、油脂光澤，微透明至半透明。呈塊狀、條帶狀、斑花狀，質(zhì)地致密細(xì)膩堅韌。摩氏硬度2—6度，密度約2.7克/立方厘米。
